Opening a bank account

We open bank accounts for foreigners in Uruguayan banks. You will be able to make SWIFT transfers, receive funds to your account, and open VISA and Mastercard debit and credit cards.

Opening a bank account in Uruguay is not mandatory for purchasing real estate. For example, you can transfer money to the notary's account handling the transaction or pay part of the property cost in cash—up to $100,000. Having your own bank account in Uruguay makes the process of buying real estate more convenient and secure.

Without permanent residency, a bank account in Uruguay can only be opened at one bank—the state-owned BROU (Banco de la República Oriental del Uruguay). The account allows you to receive and send SWIFT transfers and have VISA and Mastercard debit and credit cards.

BROU Bank Requirements for Opening an Account for Foreigners

  • Two identity documents. For example, a passport and a driver's license.
  • Proof of income. The reason why you need an account and what funds will be deposited into it.
  • Proof of address.
  • A $5,000 deposit for 181 days.

After obtaining Uruguayan permanent residency, you can open a bank account at commercial banks:

  • Itau
